Cozumel, Mexico — The Governing Board of the Quintana Roo Agency for Strategic Projects (AGEPRO) has approved 15 projects intended to spur economic development on the island of Cozumel. The approved ventures include the construction of a hotel, residential developments for apartment rentals, and other commercial establishments, with the majority expected to begin operations in 2026.
Approved Projects to Move Forward
The 15 approved projects are part of a larger group of just over 50 submitted to AGEPRO this year. They have now passed an analysis regarding the feasibility of the businesses they will establish in applicable zones, many of which are in newly created neighborhoods.
Marco Antonio Mendoza Quijano, the AGEPRO delegate on the island, explained that following the approval to sell the land, the process involves validating the contract to determine payments and the handover of the property. This step will allow developers to plan the construction or continuation of their projects.
Regarding the types of developments, Mendoza Quijano indicated that nearly 50 percent correspond to the construction of apartments for rent. He highlighted, however, the case of one hotel project. While its specific location was not provided, he stated it will be important for the tourism sector by increasing the destination's hotel room inventory.
Timeline for Development
On the subject of when construction will begin, the delegate specified that it will depend on the developers themselves. This is due to the need for them to fulfill their down payment and initial payment commitments. Consequently, the timing would depend on the beneficiaries deciding to activate their projects, though many are estimated to begin in 2026.
The official stated that several other projects remain under evaluation. These will be analyzed in the AGEPRO governing board meetings to determine their viability and to offer options, with a focus on plans that genuinely contribute to the economic development of the island.
