Cozumel’s 2025 Catrina Contest: Win Xcaret Festival Spot

Cozumel, Mexico — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) has launched the call for entries for its 2025 Catrina Characterization Contest. The event is part of the "Tradition, Light and Reunion" Day of the Dead Festival and will be held on Sunday, October 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the Island Museum.

Contest Categories and Cultural Alignment

The foundation's director general, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, explained that this event is among the activities with which the institution joins the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo. This initiative, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, aims to strengthen cultural identity, encourage family unity, and preserve Mexican traditions related to the Day of the Dead.

The competition will feature two categories:

  • Infantil, for girls aged 6 to 12 years.
  • Libre, for participants aged 15 and over.

The characterizations must be inspired by historical Mexican figures linked to art, culture, or the social sphere.

Judges and Prize Details

The judging panel will be composed of recognized figures from the cultural sphere, including Lilián Villanueva Chan, director of the Quintana Roo Institute of Culture and Arts (ICA); Frida Lyle García, councilwoman for Shared Prosperity of the municipality of Oaxaca, the state invited to the festival; and Leticia Aguerrebere, director of Art and Culture for Grupo Xcaret.

During the evaluation, aspects such as makeup, wardrobe, stage presence, creativity, and adherence to Mexican traditions will be scored. The prizes will be as follows:

  • Infantil category: first place $2,000 pesos, second $1,500, and third $1,000 pesos.
  • Libre category: first place $3,500 pesos, second $2,500, and third $1,500 pesos.

Additionally, the winner of the libre category will represent the FPMC at the Xcaret Festival of Life and Death, bringing Cozumel's talent and traditions to one of the state's most important cultural events.

Registrations will be open until October 21 at the BiblioAvión Gervasio, located at 130 Avenue between 7th South and Hidalgo streets, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
