Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease, caused by the Coxsackie virus, have been confirmed in this municipality. The cases are described as sporadic and do not currently represent a significant epidemiological concern.
José Antonio Uribe Trujillo, the municipal Secretary of Health, confirmed the presence of the virus. He stated that his department is focused on maintaining contact with schools to inform them about the disease and is also providing information to the public through social media channels.
Illness Primarily Affects Young Children
This disease affects children of preschool or early primary school age, causing lesions in the mouth, hands, or feet, from which its name is derived.
The official noted that many parents "become alarmed" when they see an infection, mistaking it for a condition similar to chickenpox, when its symptoms are in fact less severe.
"The recommendations are to maintain hygiene," commented the Secretary, who indicated that the contagion occurs from touching surfaces contaminated with the virus. "If hygiene conditions are not managed, it can spread throughout a classroom," he detailed.
It is important that, in the case of a child becoming infected, the family consults a doctor and avoids medicating the child themselves.
