Cancún, Mexico — Violence has once again struck Cancún. On the afternoon of Monday, October 13, a man and a woman were murdered in front of their young children while they were outside their home in the Vista Real subdivision, northwest of the city. According to witnesses, the assailants were traveling aboard a mototaxi.

According to initial reports, the attack occurred shortly after 4:00 p.m. on Monte Abantos street. Neighbors reported that several armed individuals approached in a mototaxi and opened fire on the couple without a word, while the children—aged four and six—witnessed the scene.

Following the aggression, the perpetrators fled the scene to an unknown destination. Within minutes, elements of the Cancún Municipal Police arrived and cordoned off the area, while paramedics confirmed that the victims no showed no vital signs. The bodies remained lying on the sidewalk, just meters from the entrance to the family home.

Elements of the Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence (Geavig) intervened to safeguard and provide care for the two children, who were placed under protection while the corresponding procedures are carried out.

Personnel from the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) began the investigation and ordered the removal of the bodies for transfer to the Forensic Medical Service.

Hours later, authorities located the mototaxi in which the alleged hitmen escaped. The unit was found abandoned near the "Jesús Kumate" General Hospital in supermanzana 248.

The FGE stated in a communiqué that it has opened an investigation file for the crime of aggravated homicide to the detriment of both victims. The initial inquiries indicate that the attack could be related to retail drug sales activities.

"This social representation, in coordination with members of the Inter-institutional Group, is carrying out the corresponding investigations with the objective of clarifying the facts, locating, and bringing those responsible to justice," the institution stated.
