Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office announced that Perla Evelyn “N” and José Miguel “N” have been formally charged and remanded to pretrial detention for their alleged involvement in the torture, sexual assault, and attempted murder of a 3-year-old boy.
Rescue and Arrests
Following an operation led by the State Investigation Police in coordination with the Specialized Group for Addressing Family and Gender-Based Violence (Geavig), authorities rescued the child and arrested his biological mother and stepfather. The victim exhibited visible injuries and signs of malnutrition upon discovery.
Evidence of Abuse
Medical examinations revealed the child had been sexually assaulted, beaten, and burned with cigarettes across multiple parts of his body. Investigators determined the couple restrained the boy on a hammock stand and, on at least one occasion, attempted to suffocate him with a belt around his neck. They also confined him inside a sack to keep him silent while they consumed narcotics.
Legal Proceedings
The Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Against Women and Gender-Based Violence compiled sufficient evidence to secure a judge’s order formally charging the suspects. The court imposed preventive detention for the duration of the trial, citing charges of family violence, rape, torture, and attempted homicide.
The child was transferred to the Center for Justice for Women, where authorities initiated the corresponding investigation file.
