Couple Detained at Sacred Cenote
Valladolid, Yucatán — Agents of the Municipal Police of Valladolid detained a Swiss tourist after catching him engaging in sexual relations with a woman from Puebla inside the Zací Cenote, one of the main tourist attractions and a site considered sacred by Mayan culture.
According to official information, the couple was detected in the act by a security agent assigned to monitor the cenote, who immediately reported to superiors and requested support. Minutes later, more officers arrived to intervene in the situation.
Tourist Attempts Justification
When approached by officers, the foreign tourist attempted to justify his conduct with the argument that, in his country, Switzerland, engaging in sexual relations in public spaces is not penalized. However, the officers explained that in Mexico this behavior constitutes an administrative offense, in addition to occurring at a site of high cultural and touristic value.
Faced with the visitor’s refusal to comply with instructions, both he and his companion were taken to the municipal police station cells, located in the Bacalar neighborhood, where they were placed at the disposal of the corresponding authority for determining responsibilities and applying current regulations.
Recent Acquaintances at Sacred Site
It emerged that the couple had reportedly met recently in that city and decided to visit the Zací Cenote, without considering the restrictions and respect required for this space, one of the most emblematic of the so-called Sultana of the East.
The authorities reiterated the call to national and foreign tourists to respect local laws, good customs, and spaces considered natural and cultural heritage of the municipality.
