Tulum, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, alongside Julio Carbajal, founding partner and vice president of operations of Grupo La Joya, led the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Joya Tulum Hospital, a private investment of more than 350 million pesos (about $17.5 million) aimed at expanding medical services in the municipality.
The governor thanked Grupo La Joya, represented also by Jorge Moreno Balcázar, director of business and expansion, for their confidence and investment, saying the project gives Tulum the opportunity to develop medical tourism and provides residents with another option for fast, efficient, professional, and timely care.
“We are consolidating a project that innovates and strengthens medical tourism,” Lezama said. “We are the World Capital of Vacations, and we have worked hard to make that happen.” She emphasized that the groundbreaking represents not just concrete and steel but a great commitment to the Tulum community.
Moreno Balcázar explained what the new complex means for Hospitales Joya and Tulum: it is being built by and for the families who live here, for those who sustain every hotel and restaurant with their work, and for the millions of visitors who choose Tulum as a world-class destination.
The Joya Tulum Hospital will be built on a site of more than 9,000 square meters (about 97,000 square feet) and will be equipped with cutting-edge technology. It will include a 24-hour emergency unit, a shock room, two operating rooms, an intensive care unit, an isolation room, 15 patient rooms, 16 medical offices, a clinical analysis and imaging laboratory, a pharmacy, and a large team of specialists.
Located on Cobá Avenue, the hospital will expand medical care for residents and visitors, strengthen immediate response to medical emergencies, and provide greater certainty for both the local population and tourists.
Lezama thanked the investors and urged them to continue building a Quintana Roo where progress has a human face, under a humanist government with a feminist heart that drives growth with shared prosperity.
Also present at the event were Verónica Lezama Espinosa, honorary president of the DIF Quintana Roo system; Diego Castañón Trejo, municipal president of Tulum; Flavio Carlos Rosado, state health secretary and director general of the State Health Services; Bernardo Cueto Riestra, tourism secretary; Soralla Portillo Figueroa, director general of expansion for Grupo Inmobiliario Mizrahi Cojab; and Magistrate Heyden Cebada Rivas, president of the Superior Court of Justice.
