Cancún, Quintana Roo — In a significant effort to preserve Cancún’s natural ecosystems, Mayor Ana Paty Peralta led a cleanup initiative under the "Urban Cenotes" program in Supermanzana 216. The event brought together members of the National Defense Secretariat (SEDENA), civil associations, residents, and volunteers, uniting efforts to advance the Plan for the Sanitation and Social Integration of Freshwater Wetlands.
The activity took place in a natural wetland spanning over 2,000 square meters, which has faced environmental threats such as the accumulation of solid waste and wastewater discharges. Mayor Peralta emphasized the importance of rescuing these spaces, highlighting their ecological, social, and economic significance for the community.
A Unified Effort for Environmental Protection
During the cleanup, Mayor Peralta worked closely with teams from the Directorate of Ecology, Firefighters, Civil Protection, and other participants. She reaffirmed that cenotes are not only symbols of cultural identity and biodiversity but also vital water sources that must be safeguarded for the well-being of future generations.
The cleanup efforts covered the water body and its surroundings, utilizing techniques such as rappelling to access higher areas. Additionally, an environmental awareness talk was held to educate participants on the connection between cenotes and the aquifer that supplies water to Cancún, promoting conservation strategies.
Tons of Waste Removed
Among the waste collected were appliances, tires, plastics, and various household debris. Authorities urged residents to reduce waste generation and improve waste management practices.
Fernando Haro Salinas, head of Ecology, reported that since the launch of the "Urban Cenotes" program, 25 water bodies have been actively addressed. Over 21 metric tons of solid waste have been removed in eight cleanup sessions so far this year, demonstrating a strong commitment to mitigating environmental damage to these valuable ecosystems.
