Solferino, Quintana Roo — A campaign initiated in late October aims to raise 30,000 pesos to cut down the sacred Mayan tree, which has been an icon in the community of Solferino. To date, voluntary contributions have raised 21,343 pesos, according to Gilberto García Canul, the owner of the property where the ceiba tree stands.
García Canul stated that they are close to reaching their goal and expressed gratitude for the support from families, voluntary contributions, and anonymous individuals who have donated.
Authorities Omit Actions Despite Pledged Support
Authorities have shown no interest in providing support, despite having announced the dispatch of forestry personnel from the Office of the Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) to review the situation and take action, which ultimately did not occur.
García Canul recalled that the sacred Mayan tree is no longer alive; it died standing, "like the great things of this world," having served for over 800 years as a point of encounter, identity, and strength for the community.
He assured that, although the hurricane season has ended, the sacred Mayan tree still poses a danger due to its dry branches. Furthermore, surrounding homes could be damaged if the tree were to collapse.
Specialized Equipment Needed for Removal of 38-Meter Tree
García Canul revealed that the ceiba measures 38 meters in height and requires specialized equipment for its removal, which is why support has been requested from volunteers and businesses through donations.
He added that those wishing to contribute can do so via a BBVA debit card, number 4152 3145 0705 8678, under the name of Gilberto García Canul. For further information, individuals can contact the number 999 247 3630.
He noted that every daily contribution is being recorded until the required 30,000 pesos are reached to hire the crane necessary for the work, given the tree's 38-meter height.
