Chetumal, MX — Eleven years after its creation and following the acquisition of the Costa Maya cruise port by the Royal Caribbean Group, the company—which now manages the Wayac Community Center (WCC)—has confirmed its relocation with the purpose of boosting economic development, strengthening social cohesion, and promoting environmental protection in the community of Mahahual.
Ari Adler Brotman, president of Royal Caribbean Group in Mexico, reported that the process includes citizen participation and that the new space will be designed to better address local needs. Since its opening in 2014, the Wayac Community Center has established itself as a community gathering point, hosting more than one thousand workshops focused on integral development and maintaining a network of more than 60 active volunteers.
Adler Brotman explained that, under the direction of Senaida Gómez, the center will be relocated in 2026 to a larger and more accessible space, and the public will be invited to participate in choosing a new name through a citizen consultation.
"These changes represent a new chapter for this important place and reflect Royal Caribbean's commitment to ensuring that members of the local community are involved and included in every step," he stated.
New Facilities and Public Consultation
The new center will feature more spacious facilities, will be located near the main road and the center of Mahahual, and will include a soccer field, multi-use courts for basketball and volleyball, as well as a jogging track.
The executive indicated that Royal Caribbean is currently developing the plans and managing the corresponding permits to begin construction of the new space.
Furthermore, a citizen consultation will be held on November 8 to select the new name for the community center from three proposals previously selected since October. Subsequently, the company will launch a contest to design the new logo for the center, with the goal of promoting local talent and giving an identity to this new stage of the project.
"Our intention is to build a strong and vibrant community for future generations, working hand-in-hand with local partners as we move forward in this evolution," concluded Adler Brotman.
