Cancún, Mexico — A Colombian tourist was abducted early Monday morning from the Mandala nightclub in Cancún's Hotel Zone and was later discovered with severe injuries, including a mutilated ear. The 44-year-old man was found hours after his disappearance in the Bonfil area.
According to the victim, Jaime L. V. I., he left the Mandala nightclub around 3:30 a.m. to find a taxi back to his accommodation, The Pyramid at Oasis, when he was intercepted by several individuals. The assailants forced him into a vehicle and transported him to a residence, where he was beaten and robbed of an unspecified amount of money and personal belongings.
After the assault, the victim was abandoned in a ditch in the Bonfil area. He managed to escape and was observed around midday on Monday, September 29, by officers from the Cancún Police in unit 5694 as he attempted to cross a highway.
The officers, noticing visible signs of violence on the man, requested paramedics. He was assessed at the scene and subsequently transported to a hospital. His injuries reportedly include hematomas, contusions, the absence of his left ear, and wounds on both hands.
The motive for the attack remains under investigation. Based on the victim's account and the fact that he is a tourist, authorities are considering robbery as a probable cause. The incident occurs amidst a backdrop of recent security concerns in Cancún involving individuals from Colombia, including the execution of several informal lenders known as "Gota a Gota."
Other recent cases involving Colombian nationals in the area include women who have been caught in human trafficking and prostitution networks, some of whom have been liberated and repatriated. There have also been reports of abuses by immigration agents against Colombians, including instances where entry to Cancún was denied despite the individuals possessing complete documentation and hotel reservations.
