Cancun, Quintana Roo — Although recent rains in Cancun caused significant flooding in several parts of the city, the Civil Protection Department warned that the highest-risk period has not yet begun and urged residents to strengthen preventive measures.
Antonio de Jesús Riveroll Ribbon, head of the department, explained that the recent precipitation is part of the normal behavior of the rainy and tropical cyclone season. He anticipated that September and October will require the most vigilance due to increased cyclone activity.
Riveroll called on families to prepare their homes, have a civil protection plan, and assemble an emergency kit containing important documents, drinking water, and non-perishable food.
He also recommended cleaning rooftops, unclogging drains, securing objects that could be displaced by wind, and checking waterproofing, especially for those who will be traveling during the summer.
Authorities urged the public to stay informed only through official channels and to avoid spreading rumors on social media.
The Benito Juárez municipal government currently maintains permanent surveillance of more than 100 flood-prone points and has coordinated brigades from Civil Protection, Firefighters, Traffic, and Public Services to respond to any emergency.
