Citizens’ Movement Regroups in Playa del Carmen for 2027 Strategy

Citizens Movement political meeting in Chetumal

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Last Saturday, the XIII Session of the Citizens’ Movement (MC) Coordinating Committee was held in Chetumal, a meeting where various internal reports were presented and approved, along with the integration of the new Electoral Structure Commission.

Beyond formal matters, what truly drew attention was the public reappearance of Adrián Pérez Vera, former municipal trustee of Solidaridad — now Playa del Carmen — who attended as a special guest. He was accompanied by orange party figures who competed in the recent electoral process: Sixto Cuevas, former candidate for municipal president; Karina Tiquet, former candidate for local deputy; and young activist América Alpuche.

It is worth recalling that during the 2024 electoral process, Pérez Vera sought to lead MC’s candidacy for municipal president of Solidaridad. Although internal polls placed him ahead, he was ultimately sidelined, and Sixto Cuevas ended up carrying the party’s banner. Today, his presence at a state event suggests a rapprochement that seemed unlikely just a few months ago.

Everything indicates that the Citizens’ Movement leadership is preparing an aggressive growth strategy for 2027, aiming to consolidate in municipalities where it currently has no representation and become a more competitive force in the state. On the party’s political board, profiles with real possibilities stand out: Lidia Rojas Fabro, who could strongly contest the municipal presidency of Othón P. Blanco; Jorge Portilla, with high probabilities in Tulum; and Francisco Puc Xiximac, who appears competitive in José María Morelos. If solid candidacies for local deputies from the south are added to this, MC could gain valuable spaces in the next legislature.

In this context, the figure of Adrián Pérez Vera gains relevance. He is considered a high-level profile within the party, with a recognized legal trajectory: he won a constitutional controversy before the Supreme Court benefiting the municipality; he promoted, from the orange agenda, the mandatory inclusion of youth and indigenous people in candidacies; he has been a law professor at various universities in Playa del Carmen; and he has actively participated in animal welfare issues, among others.

In politics, form is substance. And although Pérez Vera attended only as a guest, the gesture did not go unnoticed: both the state coordinator, Dr. Pech, and the national coordinator, Jacobo Cheja, dedicated words of welcome to him in their speeches. A clear message that internal differences might be left behind.

Undoubtedly, Citizens’ Movement faces a major challenge in Playa del Carmen, where it has no representation and obtained very low results in the past election. However, recent movements suggest the party has begun taking its first steps to rebuild the path toward 2027.
