Cirque du Soleil's JOYÀ, the company's first permanent show in Mexico, is introducing a new act called "Magnetik". This striking addition is set to enhance the sensory experience for audiences at Vidanta Riviera Maya. "Magnetik" is not just an impressive physical spectacle but also a visual narrative. It portrays the immense power released when a meteorite strikes the earth, symbolized by acrobats leaping through rings in gravity-defying feats.
Five performers from Mexico, Brazil, China, South Africa, and Spain take center stage in this energy-filled acrobatic sequence. Each artist embodies the elemental force that arises from the earth's core, representing the moment when JOYÀ connects with the cosmic power and the ancient wisdom of the planet.
The Stage Comes Alive with Magma
The costumes, designed by James Lavoie, preserve the aesthetic essence of JOYÀ with a color palette reminiscent of glowing magma. Nathalie Gagné's makeup design further enhances this mystical connection with the elements. Every aspect of the performance, from choreography to lighting, has been meticulously crafted to create a visually harmonious spectacle.
The creation of "Magnetik" was not an overnight process. It involved several months of design, rehearsal, and technical integration. The development included creating acrobatic routines, testing makeup and costumes, and an intense rehearsal phase of over 40 hours to achieve the precision and dynamism the act requires.
A Balance of Light, Precision, and Controlled Risk
One of the most complex challenges was incorporating lighting on the acrobats' mats. Designer Jean Laurin managed to strike a delicate balance, enhancing the drama of the performance without compromising the visibility and safety of the artists. The result is a truly magnetic scene in every sense of the word.
