Chiapas, Mexico — The government of Chiapas and the National Lottery unveiled a commemorative ticket for the Superior Draw, dedicated to the Red Queen of Palenque. The draw, featuring a grand prize of 17 million pesos, will take place on June 20 at the Tren Maya station in Palenque.
A Tribute to the Red Queen
From the National Lottery’s headquarters, Olivia Salomón Vibaldo stated that by reviving the figure of the Red Queen, they honor her not only as a queen but as a symbol of all women who deserve recognition.
“This draw is not just a tribute: it is an act of historical justice, so that no powerful woman is ever silenced or mistaken for a man again. And so that history is never written without them,” Salomón Vibaldo said.
She emphasized that the National Lottery aligns with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s vision of “less desk, more territory,” bringing the draw directly to Palenque, Chiapas, to ensure “memory, culture, and luck reach every corner of Mexico.”
Prize Distribution and Historical Significance
The draw, with a grand prize of 17 million pesos across two series and a total prize pool of 51 million pesos, will be held at the Tren Maya station in Palenque on June 20 at 8:00 p.m., with prize distribution beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Salomón Vibaldo acknowledged archaeologist Fanny López’s work in the Temple XIII excavations in Palenque, noting her early identification of the remains as belonging to a woman. This discovery transformed the Red Queen from an enigma into a symbol of Mayan female power.
Government and Cultural Leaders Speak
Chiapas Governor Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar highlighted the Red Queen’s significance under President Sheinbaum’s administration, which recognizes Mexico’s historical women. He stressed the importance of portraying her not just as King Pakal’s consort but as a key figure in peacekeeping efforts of her time.
Diego Prieto Hernández, director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), linked the tribute to the Year of the Indigenous Woman, addressing historical debts to indigenous peoples and women.
