Chetumal, Mexico — A stark social divide emerged in Quintana Roo’s capital over the weekend as two simultaneous events highlighted contrasting government priorities: an exclusive gala with international performers and a poorly organized local festival that left artists feeling humiliated.
The Saturday night events have sparked criticism of state and municipal officials, with accusations that authorities favor elite gatherings over supporting local culture.
Exclusive Gala Features International Star
While Chetumal streets suffer from potholes and poor lighting, the DIF organized the “Skultora” 2026 Ladies’ Carnival Ball, an exclusive event featuring formal gowns and international performer Emmanuel.
The private event has raised questions about funding transparency, with critics asking how much the government paid for the performance and why those details remain undisclosed.
Local Festival Descends Into Chaos
Meanwhile, at the Megaescultura venue, the Reggae Fest struggled with poor organization. Local singer Despika Singer criticized officials during her performance, stating: “They invited us two days ago. The call went out a week ago. They don’t respect musicians’ or the public’s time.”
Due to the last-minute planning, artists from Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Mérida were excluded, resulting in a sparsely attended event that felt like “second-class” treatment for “second-class” people, according to attendees.
Officials Face Criticism
The events have drawn direct criticism toward several officials:
Governor Mara Lezama faced accusations of prioritizing photo opportunities over cultural support after attending the gala while the Reggae Fest struggled.
The DIF, responsible for social vulnerability programs, has been accused of transforming into an elite social club by organizing million-dollar events while communities lack basic services.
Lilian Villanueva, director of the ICA cultural institute, has been criticized for “absolute failure” in organizing an international festival with only one week’s notice, disrespecting local artists.
Municipal President Yensunni Martínez has been described as allowing her administration to become a bridge that permits elite opulence to shine over community needs.
