Tulum, Mexico — Following reports from residents of the Chemuyil community on social media about discolored or dirty water in their homes, Manuel Prieto, Manager of the CAPA Water Utility in Tulum, clarified that the issues were not due to faults in the general supply but rather to internal problems within users' own plumbing systems.
Specific Cases Addressed Promptly
In an interview, Prieto explained that two specific complaints about poor water quality were received and immediately addressed in coordination with the local delegate, allowing for on-site inspections at each affected residence.
"In one case, the user's water tank had not been maintained for an extended period, so we provided recommendations on proper cleaning procedures. In the other, the hose outlet was clogged with debris, causing the water to appear discolored and emit an unpleasant odor," Prieto stated.
Water Supply Meets Quality Standards
The manager emphasized that Chemuyil's water supply system, which draws from the Chichilá catchment area, operates with optimal chlorination processes and complies with required quality standards.
"The water we distribute is safe, treated, and ready for consumption. We have no widespread reports of poor quality—only these two isolated cases, which were resolved directly," he affirmed.
Call for Proper Maintenance
Prieto urged residents to keep their water tanks, cisterns, and piping systems clean to prevent external contaminants from affecting their household water. He also asked media outlets and users to communicate directly with CAPA to address any concerns promptly.
Finally, he reiterated that the utility continuously monitors the distribution system in Chemuyil and other communities, assuring that any genuine anomalies will be acted upon immediately to safeguard public health.
