Cancún — A decline in operations within Cancún's nautical industry, resulting from the low season, has led business owners in the sector to implement measures such as early vacations, partial closures, and solidarity days to mitigate low sales.

Layoffs Ruled Out Despite Labor Shortage

However, Francisco Fernández Millán, president of the Asociados Náuticos Quintana Roo (ANQROO), stated that despite this difficult period, they rule out employee layoffs, as the industry is also suffering from a shortage of labor.

According to Fernández Millán, the sector's occupancy during the summer was around 60 percent, and during the month of September, it has decreased to between 30 and 40 percent, which has forced business owners to take these measures.

Significant Holiday Weekend Uptick Not Expected

Regarding the upcoming holiday weekend for the 215th Anniversary of Mexican Independence, the business leader commented that they do not expect a considerable uptick either, adding that, regardless of what happens, it will not help them salvage the low season.

On which factors may have contributed to this situation, Fernández Millán noted that sargassum played an important role, as paradoxically the weather, compared to last year, has been much better during this year of 2025.
