Tourist transportation groups in Cancún have united to plan a protest against Uber. This follows the announcement that Uber has resumed operations at Cancún International Airport. The protest is scheduled for August 31st.
Organizations such as the Mexican Association of Tourist Transporters of Quintana Roo (Amtranstur) are leading the call. They argue that they have not been granted any protective orders and should not be operating at Cancún International Airport. "Yes to fair competition, no to illegality," the transporters have stated.
The protest will target digital transportation platforms like Uber, Didi, In Drive, and Cabify. The organizers have warned that there may be blockages on the avenues leading to Cancún International Airport on the day of the protest.
On Saturday, August 31st, drivers and leaders of the tourist transport associations are set to meet at around 10 am.
Uber claims they have won a protection order from the District Court in Administrative Matters. This ruling, in favor of the platform, was granted by federal authorities as of October 2023 and applies to all airports in the country.
On July 15th, it was announced that Uber drivers can provide transportation services at Cancún Airport without needing any special permission.
