Cancún, Mexico — The first-ever "Recicla Run," a commemorative race marking World Recycling Day, will take place on May 17 at Malecón Tajamar in Cancún. Organized to promote environmental awareness through physical activity, the event introduces an innovative registration requirement: participants must submit a bag filled with recyclable waste such as PET plastic, aluminum cans, file paper, or cardboard.
Unique Registration and Prizes
Alejandro Luna López, Director of the Benito Juárez Sports Institute, explained that the registration process is designed to encourage recycling. In exchange, the top three finishers will receive prizes. The race aims to unite families and individuals in an effort to foster ecological consciousness while engaging in a healthy, community-oriented event.
A Global Observance with Local Impact
World Recycling Day, recognized since the early 2000s, is promoted by civil organizations, local governments, and environmental agencies. Mexico joined the international commemoration in 2005. The "Recicla Run" seeks to highlight proper waste separation of valuable materials like PET, cardboard, paper, and aluminum.
Event Details and Participation
The recreational race is open to men and women of all ages, with distances ranging from 3 to 5 kilometers. The starting signal will be given at 8:00 a.m. Participants must register in advance on the website protudec.mx, free of charge. Race kits will be distributed on May 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Kuchil Baxal gymnasium.
Combining Sports and Sustainability
Organizers emphasized that the event merges physical activity with environmental responsibility. By participating, runners not only advocate for an active lifestyle but also contribute to responsible waste management, reducing pollution and raising awareness about recycling. The initiative aims to spark both athletic engagement and ecological consciousness in the community.
