Cancún Selected as Host for Major International Fitness Event
Cancún, Mexico — During the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) 2026, state and municipal authorities announced that Cancún will host the HYROX international fitness competition for the first time. The event is scheduled to take place from March 13 to 15 at Malecón Tajamar.
The announcement was made by Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Benito Juárez Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta de la Peña, who emphasized the importance of this event for positioning the destination as a reference for sports tourism.
International Event with Views of Nichupté Lagoon
The state governor highlighted that the arrival of HYROX represents an opportunity for athletes and visitors from different parts of the world to experience a unique event in Cancún, with a privileged natural setting facing the Nichupté Lagoon.
According to the information presented, HYROX Cancún already has more than 8,500 registered athletes from various countries, confirming the global reach of the event and its positive impact on the destination’s tourism activity.
Cancún Consolidates as Sports Tourism Destination
During her intervention, Mara Lezama emphasized that Cancún continues to diversify its tourism offerings by positioning itself not only as a sun and beach destination but also as an epicenter for sports tourism, wellness, luxury, and high-level experiences.
She also noted that this type of event reinforces the city’s international projection in a context where Cancún is also emerging as a gateway to the World Cup, strengthening its global image.
What is HYROX and How is it Competed?
HYROX is a fitness competition that combines endurance and strength, consisting of 8 kilometers of running, divided into one-kilometer laps, interspersed with 8 functional exercise stations.
Among the challenges participants will face include tests such as rowing, sled push and pull, burpees, farmer’s walk, sandbag lunges, and ball throws, making it a physical challenge suitable for different levels of preparation.
For her part, Mayor Ana Paty Peralta emphasized that HYROX Cancún will be an international-caliber event where sports will be experienced in a unique natural environment, strengthening the municipality’s tourism and sports projection.
Also present at the presentation were Quintana Roo Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra and Benito Juárez Tourism Secretary Juan Pablo de Zulueta, who agreed that the event will generate significant economic benefits and greater international visibility for Cancún.
