Cancún to Host 89th Banking Convention With Sheinbaum, Trudeau as Key Speakers

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The 89th Banking Convention will take place in Cancún from March 18-20, bringing together financial authorities, banking representatives, and international experts to discuss challenges and opportunities in the financial system.

The event, organized by the Mexican Banking Association (ABM), will operate under the theme “Innovating Banking, Building the Future.” It will feature financial system authorities, representatives from national and international banks, economics specialists, and public sector leaders.

Key Highlights and Schedule

The program’s most notable moments include an inaugural address by President Claudia Sheinbaum and a keynote conference with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who will participate in a dialogue about global leadership and transformation.

Wednesday, March 18: Activities begin with panels focused on the social impact of banking and sustainable financing. Sessions include:

  • Panel: Banking Foundations (11:00), featuring specialists like Sofía Ludlow, director of BBVA Mexico Foundation, and Ricardo Bucio from the Mexican Center for Philanthropy
  • Sustainable Financing: Risks and Opportunities (12:05), with participation from Fabrizio López Gallo, director of Financial Stability at Banxico, and Antonio Suárez, finance director of Grupo Coppel
  • Banking as an Ally in Developing Sustainable Communities (12:45), with government and financial system representatives

The afternoon will feature a media presentation about the launch of the Banks of Mexico Foundation, led by ABM President Emilio Romano, followed by a panel on economic empowerment and banking’s new social focus. The day concludes with the “Women to Highlight in Banking: Trajectories That Leave a Mark” ceremony, featuring Bank of Mexico Governor Victoria Rodríguez Ceja.

Thursday, March 19: The second day focuses on economic and technological challenges in the financial sector. Key panels include:

  • The Future of Money: What’s Coming for Mexico and the World (10:00), with representatives from Banamex, HSBC, Banxico, Mastercard, and the Bank for International Settlements
  • Infrastructure Credit as a Multiplier for Growth (11:00), with officials from the Treasury Department, CFE (Federal Electricity Commission), and the financial sector
  • More Productivity and Formalization to Strengthen SMEs (12:00), with leaders from BBVA, Nafin, and economic development specialists
  • The Customer at the Center: Banking’s Top Priority in Mexico (13:00), featuring philosopher Michael Sandel

Inauguration and Closing Events

The inaugural plenary session begins at 17:00 with messages from:

  • Mara Lezama, Governor of Quintana Roo
  • Victoria Rodríguez Ceja, Governor of the Bank of Mexico
  • Édgar Amador Zamora, Treasury Secretary
  • Emilio Romano, ABM President

A central moment will be the keynote conference “Global Leadership and Transformation,” featuring a dialogue with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, interviewed by Emilio Romano.

The convention concludes with closing messages from Ángel Cabrera Mendoza, president of the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV), and Treasury Secretary Édgar Amador Zamora, followed by a closing lunch with a talk by former Argentine soccer player Jorge Valdano, and a concert by Emmanuel and Mijares.
