Cancún, Mexico — In an unprecedented milestone for Quintana Roo’s cultural landscape, Cancún has been chosen as the host city for SALAR – Laboratory of Creation for Bodies That Enjoy, Lose, and Mourn. This initiative, spearheaded by Mexico’s Ministry of Culture through the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) and its National Theater Coordination, is supported by the Benito Juárez City Council and the Institute of Culture and the Arts.
A Historic Opportunity for Local Artists
The SALAR laboratory is part of the official programming for the 45th National Theater Showcase, offering a historic opportunity for local artists engaged in creative exploration and innovation. This interdisciplinary experimental space will integrate diverse artistic disciplines, including physical theater, dance, visual arts, and performance, fostering a dynamic exchange among them.
The call for participation targets artists residing in Benito Juárez who seek to discover new expressive tools through the body as a medium for memory and reflection. Up to 15 participants will be selected to engage in a hybrid work process—combining in-person and virtual sessions—running from September to November 2025.
Focus on Ethical Dialogue and Collaborative Creation
SALAR’s primary objective is to promote ethical dialogue and collaborative creation, centering on themes such as the body, exile, memory, and progress. Under the guidance of nationally and internationally renowned artists, participants will not only learn but also contribute to the public presentation of their works during the 45th National Theater Showcase.
Additionally, up to four technical collaborators specializing in lighting, set design, and costumes will be selected, ensuring a comprehensive and enriching experience for all involved.
Application Details
Applications will remain open until July 25, 2025, at 6:00 PM local time. Interested candidates can submit their proposals through the official website: https://mnt.inba.gob.mx, where detailed requirements and selection criteria are available.
