Cancún, Mexico — As part of LGBTQ+ Pride Month activities, the Civil Registry Office in Benito Juárez has reported 22 requests for gender identity changes and one same-sex marriage, according to the department’s director, Eduardo Kuyoc Rodríguez.
"Love with Pride" Initiative Gains Momentum
Kuyoc Rodríguez emphasized the positive response to the program, titled "Love with Pride," and highlighted the commitment to fostering a more just, equal, and human rights-respecting society. The initiative offers free procedures to streamline gender marker modifications on birth certificates for transgender and non-binary individuals.
"The Diversity Affairs Directorate launched a campaign accepting applications until June 14 for those seeking identity changes. Services are available from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Official Offices 01 and 02 in Parque de las Palapas," he stated.
Processing Underway for Applications
Kuyoc Rodríguez confirmed that the 22 requests are now being processed, with applicants scheduled to receive notifications starting Monday. "This is the first step. We will then evaluate compliance with requirements," he explained.
A recent municipal reform in Benito Juárez eliminated all associated fees for the procedure. Additionally, negotiations with the State Civil Registry Directorate waived the state-level payment.
Requirements for Gender Identity Change
The director outlined the process: "The procedure is entirely free. Applicants must submit a written request, their original birth certificate, a valid voter ID, proof of address, and a formal petition. Only adults are eligible."
The initiative underscores Cancún’s efforts to advance LGBTQ+ rights during Pride Month.
