Public transport concessionaires in Cancún have unilaterally decided to increase fares by five pesos, bringing the cost to 15 pesos per trip in urban areas and 17 pesos in the hotel zone. This unauthorized fare hike is not only illegal, but it also poses a threat to family budgets.
In recent hours, transport operators in Cancún have started displaying signs on their vehicles, announcing the fare increase to passengers. The signs read, "Attention. Public transport fares will increase beginning Friday, August 23, 2024." This announcement has sparked annoyance among users and is seen as an attempt by the concessionaires to pressure state authorities into approving a fare increase. Under the Mobility Law, they are allowed to initiate this procedure in the third quarter of the year.
In a bold move to increase pressure and stir social unrest, the concessionaires have acted independently, defying state authorities and violating the Mobility Law and its regulations. These laws outline the conditions for a fare increase. In response, state authorities have started removing these signs from the vehicles. However, a new problem has arisen in Playa del Carmen, where concessionaires have already begun charging the increased fare. They are refusing to let passengers board unless they pay this amount, as evidenced by videos circulating on social media.
Multiple sources confirm that the fare increase in Cancún's public transport is illegal. It has not been officially authorized, required procedures have not been followed, and no approved feasibility study has been conducted. It also contradicts the Mobility Law. Both passengers and state authorities oppose this measure due to its potential negative impact on family budgets.
