Cancun Proposes Financial Support for Caregivers of Disabled and Elderly

Cancun, Quintana Roo — The Benito Juarez city council is moving forward with a program called “Caring for the Caregiver,” designed to provide financial and other support to people who care for family members or residents with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or who are elderly.

Councilman Marcos de Naele Basilio Saldivar said the project is currently in the drafting phase, with officials working on the rules of operation that will define eligibility requirements and how to access the benefit.

Technical teams are establishing eligibility criteria and forming a review committee to oversee resource allocation, monitor the program, and evaluate its social impact, he explained.

One of the main goals is to ensure transparency in the use of public funds through indicators that measure results and strengthen the program over time.

The initiative includes not only direct cash assistance but also a comprehensive strategy to improve caregivers’ quality of life. Planned benefits include job training, personal development workshops, and psychological counseling coordinated across various municipal departments.

According to the councilman, the proposal initially aims to cover about 3,000 caregivers in Benito Juarez, a figure similar to the number of beneficiaries who previously received support through municipal scholarship programs.

Financial viability comes from a budget reengineering following an expansion of federal educational scholarship programs, which would allow the city to redirect some municipal funds to this new social program.

The city council is working with the Municipal Treasury to determine the amount each beneficiary will receive and ensure sufficient budget for implementation.

Before it can launch, “Caring for the Caregiver” must be approved by the relevant commissions and then by the Benito Juarez City Council. Once that process is complete, the city will publish an official call for applications and open registration for those interested in the new support.
