Cancún, Mexico — The organization Cancún Pride has announced plans to open a support center in 2026, an initiative created in response to discrimination that prevents many members of the LGBT+ community from accessing reliable health services.
The center will be located in Cancún's region 95. Linger Mendez, the founder of Cancún Pride, stated that they are preparing a site that would be a first for the city.
"It would be the first time that a support center of this kind, focused on the LGBT+ community of Cancún, has been established," Mendez indicated.
The facility will have endocrinologists available for transgender women who wish to undergo a safe transition, as well as for women in general. The site will also feature specialists in dentistry and psychology. The fee for services will be between 300 and 400 pesos per consultation.
This represents significant savings, as a specialist medical consultation in Cancún can cost between 1,000 and 1,500 pesos.
A Response to Discrimination and Health Disparities
Mendez explained that the center aims to prevent discriminatory treatment, noting that historically, LGBTQ+ people experience a series of health inequalities. They face a greater risk of certain conditions and have less access to public health services.
Among the pathologies to which the LGBT+ community is more vulnerable are sexually transmitted diseases and HIV. For older adults, chronic illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension are a concern.
Mendez expressed that health also refers to mental and emotional well-being, which is often affected by the discrimination community members face at home, in school, or at work. The use of substances and addiction within the community were also acknowledged.
Mood and anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and the use of alcohol and tobacco also form part of the spectrum of health issues present within the community.
Regarding HIV, activist groups have previously reported a lack of medications in health institutions, as well as a shortage of prevention campaigns on the topic.
