Cancún Prepares for Over 20 Religious Processions During Holy Week

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Local authorities have approved permits for at least 20 public religious processions, known as Viacrucis, to be held across Cancún during Holy Week. The Benito Juárez municipal government has processed approximately 20 requests for support and permits from various congregations.

Yendy Gabriela Martín Chanché, director of Religious Affairs for the municipality, stated that while all denominations maintain their services, the Catholic Church organizes the most public events, requiring coordination with operational departments like Traffic, Firefighters, and Civil Protection to ensure participant safety.

“The Catholic Church is the one that goes out to occupy public spaces for their pilgrimages and processions; that’s the difference in terms of numbers,” Martín Chanché explained. “Other denominations carry out their activities, but inside their own congregations, and there’s no need to request permits there.”

Major Events Draw Thousands

Among the largest gatherings is the procession held in the hotel zone, which Martín Chanché noted remains the most attended event in the destination each Holy Week.

“They requested that activity at Playa Delfines. This procession gathers approximately three to five thousand people; it’s already a tradition in our municipality,” she reported.

Another significant procession takes place at the Cristo Rey Church in Parque de las Palapas, while other local churches estimate attendances ranging from 100 to 700 people based on their previous reports.
