Cancún Police Officer Arrested for Robbery, Mayor Vows Zero Tolerance

Cancún police officer arrested for robbery, Mayor Ana Paty Peralta announces zero tolerance policy

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Authorities arrested a municipal police officer for his alleged involvement in a violent robbery ring that targeted people leaving bars in downtown Cancún, Mayor Ana Paty Peralta announced.

“In my administration, there is no room for impunity,” Peralta said, adding that she ordered full cooperation with the State Prosecutor’s Office from the outset of the investigation.

The officer, identified as Adrián V., alias “Panza de Yegua,” was an active-duty officer at the time of his arrest. He and another suspect, Edy Omar H., alias “Camarón,” face allegations of participating in a cell responsible for robberies in the city’s central district.

Investigators linked the pair to at least 30 complaints of assaults, primarily against individuals exiting nightlife venues. Victims reported being followed for several blocks before being intercepted and robbed of cash and belongings.

The suspects allegedly used two taxis—a Nissan Versa and a Nissan March—to flee after the crimes. Victims identified both men as participants in the robberies and possible assaults, including accusations of inappropriate touching against women and minors.

The arrests followed intelligence work and analysis of surveillance camera footage from the central superblocks, the “El Crucero” area, and other points in the downtown zone where the criminal group allegedly operated.

The mayor noted that the officer already had an open internal procedure and was subject to an administrative dismissal process under current regulations. “Zero tolerance for any act that violates the law or public trust. In this administration, no one is above the law, because in Cancún the law is respected, trust is defended, and authority is exercised,” Peralta stated.

The case is now in the hands of the State Prosecutor’s Office, which is compiling the corresponding investigation file. Authorities continue their efforts to locate more potential victims and determine if others were involved in the robbery network.
