Cancún, Mexico — The School of Artistic Initiation in Cancún, affiliated with the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (Inbal), has begun making a significant impact on the cultural education of local children just months after its inauguration. The long-awaited project, which opened its doors in February, currently serves a first generation of 100 children between the ages of 6 and 13.
A Space for Artistic Exploration
Marcela Torres, the school’s director, emphasized that the educational program allows students to explore various artistic disciplines, including music, dance, theater, and visual arts. During the first semester, the curriculum offers a comprehensive exploratory phase, enabling children to experience all areas before selecting a specialization.
“Our goal is for them to discover their interests and talents in an environment that is both structured and playful,” Torres explained in an interview with Radio Fórmula.
The school operates in the former Alfredo Bonfil elementary school building, located next to Parque de las Palapas, a central and symbolic space in the city that now also represents children’s access to art and culture.
Summer Program Expands Opportunities
Due to high demand—enrollment slots filled on the same day they opened—the school has launched a summer course titled Verano con mi tribu (Summer with My Tribe). Designed for children aged 8 to 13 who were unable to enroll in the regular program or simply wish to engage in artistic activities during their vacation, the course will run from August 4 to 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Held at the Institute of Culture and Arts on Avenida Chichén Itzá near the fire station, the program is structured to accommodate working parents’ schedules.
“This is not just an entertainment space; it’s built on three fundamental pillars: creativity, teamwork, and child protagonism. Here, children are not spectators—they are decision-makers,” Torres stated.
Over two weeks, participants will engage in artistic experiences including dance, music, visual arts, theater, creative writing, and physical and mental skill-building activities. More than 10 specialized instructors and 10 guides will oversee the program.
Enrollment Details
Registrations are open for one week and must be completed in person at the Institute of Culture and Arts, Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Additional information can be obtained by calling 998 898 4510, extension 107.
The course carries a nominal fee to cover materials and instruments. “It’s a minimal cost compared to private offerings but ensures a high-quality artistic experience with all resources included,” the director noted.
