Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mayor Ana Paty Peralta has launched “Todo Cancún,” a digital platform designed to steer international tourists away from the Hotel Zone and into the city’s historic center, aiming to redirect economic spending to local businesses.
The initiative addresses decades of economic disparity where the city center has struggled to capture a share of the tourism revenue concentrated in the coastal resort area. The platform, described as a technological “Trojan horse,” offers curated guides to ensure safety, quality, and authentic experiences for visitors exploring urban areas.
“We integrated options in culture, sports, and tourism to be an easy-to-use guide. We want them to know the real Cancún,” Peralta said, highlighting the central tool at todo.cancun.gob.mx.
QR Codes and Themed Routes
The strategy relies on QR codes installed along Avenida Nader in the Zona Fundacional, providing immediate access to “Distrito Cancún,” a section featuring boutique hotels, specialty cafes, and local bars. The platform segments the city into niche experiences through themed routes:
- Ruta del Sabor: A culinary tourism hook showcasing authentic Caribbean flavors.
- Ruta Luxury and Ruta Zofu: Contrasting exclusivity with the historical roots of the city center.
- Ruta Cultura: Connecting venues like the renovated Teatro de la Ciudad and Parque de las Palapas.
Sports and Culture as Draws
The platform also digitalizes event listings at venues such as the Beto Ávila Stadium and Poliforum, targeting “event tourists” who come for baseball games or concerts but may be unaware of central lodging and dining options. Institutions like the Ka’Yok’ Planetarium and Museo Casa Maya are now promoted to visitors who previously focused only on beach activities.
Addressing Security Concerns
To overcome perceptions of insecurity, the platform includes direct links to emergency services like the Consular House, Red Cross, and the state government’s “Guest Assist” program, aiming to reassure travelers venturing beyond their resorts.
“Todo Cancún” represents the municipal administration’s most determined effort to democratize Quintana Roo’s tourism success by shifting economic activity from the coastline to the city’s founding streets.
