Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The modernization of 4.2 kilometers of the Cancún-Isla Blanca corridor is 37 percent complete and scheduled for completion in December, according to Mexico’s Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation Secretariat (SICT).
The work is taking place between kilometer markers 7+000 and 11+200 on the mainland side of Isla Mujeres, where the road is being widened to two lanes in each direction. The project also includes a bicycle lane, sidewalks, street lighting, and horizontal and vertical signage, the federal agency said.
The section currently under construction has a roadway width of approximately six meters. Work began in March and is now focused on earthworks, drainage and paving, along with complementary and related works. SICT said environmental monitoring and mitigation measures are also being carried out during construction.
The project is expected to benefit about 22,600 residents in the northern part of Quintana Roo and generate 1,320 direct and indirect jobs. It is part of a broader set of improvements along the corridor connecting Cancún to the Isla Mujeres mainland and the tourist developments toward Isla Blanca.
