Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mayor Ana Paty Peralta inspected new pedestrian safety infrastructure on key avenues as part of a broader initiative to prioritize walkability in the city.
The municipal government is installing safe pedestrian crossings on Avenida Huayacán, Avenida 135, and Avenida Colegios, with a 500-meter intervention at the Huayacán crossing. “This will bring important order to this area because it prioritizes citizens and pedestrians so they can cross the street safely,” Peralta said during the inspection.
She met with residents from the Social Oversight Committee who monitored the work, with neighbors expressing gratitude for the completed improvements. They explained the signage was needed to cross safely during peak traffic hours.
“For many years, the city was built without considering people—there were no pedestrian crossings,” Peralta noted. “Today, the priority is mobility projects that include traffic signals, sidewalks with tactile paving, bollards, proper ramps, walkways, and pedestrian lines for everyone’s safety on the streets.”
The mayor also urged residents to keep public spaces clean and free of debris to prevent drainage blockages and flooding, while maintaining a positive image for shared environments.
Officials present during the tour included Municipal Comptroller Hilario Gutiérrez Valasis, Municipal Treasurer Alan Herrera Borges, Public Works and Services Secretary Samantha Hernández Cardeña, Transportation and Traffic Director Vanesa Valenzuela Morales, IMPLAN (Municipal Institute of Urban Development Planning) Director Héctor Sánchez Tirado, and Transparency Unit Director Monsserrath Milián Galera.
Later, Peralta and other administration officials inspected the 2025 traffic signal network modernization at the intersection of Avenida Heberto Castillo and Avenida Lak’in. This project is over 44% complete and is part of a plan for 10 safe crossings throughout Cancún featuring vehicle and pedestrian signals with technical adjustments.
“The goal is for Cancún residents to navigate streets safely through mobility improvements, starting with pedestrian traffic signals for better traffic management,” Peralta stated.
The work will directly benefit residents of neighborhoods like Cielo Nuevo and Paseos del Mar, who will gain safer access to nearby businesses through new traffic signals, pedestrian signals, geometric adjustments, signage, speed bumps, and raised pedestrian crossings.
