Cancún, Quintana Roo — More than 10,000 athletes from 16 countries gathered at the Malecón Tajamar for the HYROX 2026 fitness racing competition, an event that officials say solidifies Cancún’s position as a premier destination for international sports tourism.
The three-day event, held from March 13-15, attracted approximately 30,000 visitors and featured a challenging 8-kilometer circuit combining running segments with functional exercise stations designed to test participants’ strength and strategy.
Cancún Mayor Ana Paty Peralta toured the competition stations and praised the event’s success, attributing it to coordination between state and municipal tourism departments along with the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council.
“Congratulations to all the participants who competed in this spectacular HYROX event,” Peralta said. “Welcome to Cancún, this is your home.”
The mayor emphasized that such events contribute to community building and social cohesion while promoting citizen well-being.
International Competition Format
Organizers implemented a wave start system with groups of 40 athletes beginning every 10 minutes to ensure smooth competition flow. For this first outdoor edition, they set up shaded areas to provide sun protection and safety measures for both athletes and spectators.
Domestically, the largest contingent of participants came from Quintana Roo, followed by Mexico City, Yucatán, State of Mexico, and Nuevo León. International athletes traveled primarily from the United States, Canada, Guatemala, Colombia, and France.
With support from Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama, Cancún continues to position itself as a top-tier destination capable of combining natural beauty with the infrastructure needed to host world-class sporting events.
