Cancún to Host National Climate Change Colloquium in October

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún will host the 16th National Colloquium of the Seminario de Cultura Mexicana (SCM) on Oct. 22 and 23, an event dedicated to climate change and its effects, organizers announced Tuesday at a press conference in Mexico City.

Roughly 110 members and representatives are expected to take part, including delegates from 45 of the organization’s 66 regional correspondentships across Mexico. Members of the SCM’s international chapters in Guatemala and New York will also attend.

The announcement was made by Carlos López Jiménez, president of the Cancún correspondentship; Silvia Molina, a full member of the SCM and general secretary of its governing board; and Gerardo Jaramillo, the organization’s executive secretary.

A Focus on Climate and Biodiversity

Organizers said the colloquium aims to open a dialogue on climate change and the loss of biodiversity, with Quintana Roo playing a central role in the discussion given its natural wealth.

Among the state’s key ecosystems are its sea, coral reefs and mangroves, along with other natural areas facing environmental pressures. The gathering is intended to bring together different perspectives on those challenges and bring the debate closer to the general public.

Art and Culture as Tools for Awareness

The program will include lectures, dialogues and panel discussions examining the environmental crisis from multiple angles, as well as the relationship between art and climate change.

One highlight is a dramatized reading of Los niños de la lluvia, a play by Mexican playwright Saúl Enríquez. The organizers said the artistic component is meant to weave creative expression into the environmental conversation and reach a wider audience.

Beyond the Two-Day Event

The Cancún correspondentship, led by López Jiménez, is preparing a work agenda that will continue after the colloquium, with activities aimed at children, young people and the broader public.

Complementary events will run from Oct. 17 to Oct. 27 at various venues across Cancún, creating opportunities for civic participation and keeping attention on the region’s environmental challenges.

The main sessions will take place at the Teatro de la Ciudad | Centro Cultural de las Artes. Admission is free and the events are open to the public. The Cancún chapter said it will soon release the full schedule, including times, participants and specific activities.
