Cancún Distributes Blankets as Unusual Winter Cold Grips Quintana Roo

Civil Protection personnel in Cancún handing out blankets to residents during a cold wave

Cancún, Mexico — An unusually harsh winter has settled over Quintana Roo, prompting local authorities to distribute blankets to vulnerable residents as cold temperatures not felt in decades cause widespread disruption, including high school absenteeism.

The state, known for its warm to temperate climate year-round, is experiencing a severe winter that has caught many residents unprepared. This week, schools in Cancún’s irregular settlements reported high levels of absenteeism as residents fall ill, stay home to keep warm, or avoid going out due to the freezing conditions.

In response, the Benito Juárez Municipality, through Cancún’s Civil Protection agency, has toured various city neighborhoods to deliver blankets to those most in need.

“Your well-being is our priority! Faced with the low temperatures recorded in our city, our Cancún Civil Protection team is visiting various neighborhoods to deliver blankets to Cancún families,” the Benito Juárez Municipality posted on social media. “We are working to protect the health of our girls, boys, and older adults. Let’s continue taking care of ourselves together!”

The cold snap is affecting the entire Yucatán Peninsula, with neighboring states Campeche and Yucatán also reporting concerns from residents unaccustomed to such weather and lacking the means to combat it. Forecasts indicate the low temperatures will persist in the region for the coming days.
