Cancún, Quintana Roo — A local children’s theater production has been selected to represent Cancún in one of Mexico’s most important national cultural festivals, with organizers announcing a free public performance to celebrate the achievement.
The play “Maui, el sonido de las aves” (Maui, the Sound of the Birds) will participate in the 2026 Gran Maratón Nacional de Teatro para Niñas, Niños, Niñes y Adolescentes (National Theater Marathon for Children and Adolescents), organized by the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature).
The production by theater company Creares Escénicas, represented by Brenda Karina Zenil Gasca, was chosen to showcase local artistic talent in the national event, highlighting the growth of children’s and youth theater in Quintana Roo.
Free Family Performance
The Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes de Benito Juárez announced a special free performance open to children, adolescents, and families in Cancún. The show will take place on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Teatro 8 de Octubre, one of the municipality’s most emblematic cultural venues.
Admission will be free, though officials recommend arriving early due to expected high demand for cultural activities aimed at young audiences.
National Cultural Initiative
The National Theater Marathon, coordinated through the National Theater Coordination, aims to bring performing arts to children and youth across Mexico. The program focuses on three main objectives:
- Developing new audiences by fostering interest in theater from early ages
- Promoting inclusion and diversity through stories that engage with contemporary realities of children and adolescents
- Supporting local theater companies by providing national platforms for creators and theatrical groups
Cultural Strengthening
The selection of “Maui, el sonido de las aves” also reinforces the Teatro 8 de Octubre’s position as one of Benito Juárez municipality’s primary cultural spaces, where artistic activities, stage presentations, and community events regularly take place.
Through initiatives like this, Cancún continues to strengthen its cultural offerings, providing spaces where art and education intersect to inspire new generations.
