Cancún, Mexico — The first batch of sea turtle hatchlings has been released in Cancún as part of the 2025 “Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation Program.” The initiative, which aims to safeguard thousands of specimens this year, marks a significant step in preserving the region’s marine ecosystem.
Inaugural Release at Playa Marlín
The program’s first release took place at Playa Marlín, where 84 hatchlings were returned to the ocean. Benito Juárez Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta participated in the event and shared updates on social media, highlighting the community’s commitment to conservation efforts.
Record-Breaking Nest Protection
This season, authorities have documented 126 protected nests, safeguarding over 15,600 eggs. Strict measures are enforced throughout the process, from nesting to the hatchlings’ journey to the sea. The program includes patrols, nest marking, public awareness campaigns, and other protective actions to ensure the survival of sea turtles along Mexico’s beaches.
Ongoing Efforts for Marine Conservation
The program will continue throughout the year, with additional releases and conservation activities planned. Authorities emphasized the importance of these efforts in maintaining the delicate balance of the marine ecosystem.
The initiative builds on previous conservation strategies, including unconventional methods such as using mayonnaise to protect sea turtles, as reported in earlier years.
