Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Benito Juárez municipal government is moving forward with plans to create a major urban corridor in Cancún’s city center, aiming to transform the area’s appearance and enhance the quality of life for residents and tourists alike.

This comprehensive project seeks to interconnect the most emblematic points of the downtown zone through modern infrastructure, universal accessibility criteria, and a holistic strategy for organizing public space.

Carlos del Castillo Álvarez, director of the Administrative Management Unit for the Cancún District project, announced that the corridor will primarily connect nodes including Ombligo Verde, Mercado 28, the renovated Parque de las Palapas, the Municipal Palace, and Avenida Nader.

“The connection of these points is guaranteed through strengthened pedestrian connectivity with the creation of safe crossings and the implementation of technical elements like ramps and the so-called ‘ears’ on corners, designed to expand the pedestrian’s refuge space and visibility,” the municipal official stated.

One of the current administration’s objectives is to intervene in zones that have historically remained neglected, with Calle Pino being a priority strategic project. Considered one of the gateways to the city center, officials are currently working on the final design stage for its total renovation.

Del Castillo explained that the current conditions of that roadway do not reflect the image officials wish to project to tourism, so the final executive project contemplates critical aspects of security, state-of-the-art lighting, organization of commerce on the public right-of-way, and a substantial improvement in the urban image.

“Calle Pino does not currently show the face we would like toward tourism. We are working on the final project to execute a renovation that includes security, lighting, order of commerce on the public right-of-way, and urban image,” he said.

Alongside these works, plans continue for the revitalization of Mercado 28, which will integrate organically with the already visible interventions at Parque de las Palapas. However, the official emphasized that the success of transforming the city center does not depend exclusively on physical infrastructure, but also on a scheme of order and citizen co-responsibility.

In this sense, officials have called on neighbors and merchants to actively participate in monitoring the environment, reporting any invasion of public space or areas showing deterioration. Such reports can be made via ChatCun.
