Bacalar, Quintana Roo — A camper fire in a popular tourist area of Bacalar caused alarm among visitors and residents on Saturday, leaving one person with minor burns after flames spread from an attempt to control a beehive.
The incident occurred on Calle 36 and Avenida Costera, where a man reportedly tried to manage a beehive using fire. Witnesses said the flames quickly got out of control and spread to a parked camper on a vacant lot, igniting the vehicle as neighbors and tourists watched.
The fire generated a dense column of smoke visible from several nearby points, causing concern among people in the area, particularly because it occurred in a zone frequented by tourists. Some witnesses indicated that wind fanned the flames, making it difficult for the man to extinguish them on his own.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene after receiving reports of the fire and worked to control the situation, preventing the blaze from spreading to adjacent properties. Their prompt intervention contained the incident before it could cause more significant damage.
As a result of the incident, a man sustained minor burns and hair loss from direct exposure to the fire. Paramedics treated him at the scene; authorities have not reported whether he was transported to a hospital or if he owned the burned camper.
The incident caused only material damage to the affected vehicle, which was partially consumed by flames. Traffic in the area resumed after cooling operations and debris removal.
Local authorities have begun an investigation to clarify the circumstances and determine responsibility. They also reiterated calls for the public to avoid using fire for wildlife control, noting that such practices can lead to high-risk situations, especially in urban areas or places with dry vegetation.
