Bus Driver Dies at Wheel in Cancún After Collision on López Portillo Avenue

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A public bus driver died Friday afternoon while driving in Cancún after losing consciousness at the wheel on a major avenue, authorities reported.

The incident occurred around noon on José López Portillo Avenue in the city’s Supermanzana 59 area. Passengers told officials the driver, operating bus number 800 for the Autocar company, suddenly began slowing down before colliding with a car and then losing consciousness.

Multiple emergency calls to 911 alerted the C5 security complex, which dispatched Red Cross paramedics to the scene. The responders found the approximately 45-year-old man with no vital signs and reported no visible signs of violence.

Police officers arrived shortly after and cordoned off the area near the Federal Prosecutor’s Office building, just meters from Kabah Avenue. The State Prosecutor’s Office took over the investigation through its Ministerial Police and Forensic Services unit, which handled the removal of the body.

According to information obtained, the driver had departed normally from his base on ChacMool Avenue and proceeded along that road until reaching López Portillo Avenue. Passengers said they noticed nothing unusual until the driver began slowing down near the Federal Prosecutor’s Office.
