Cancun, Quintana Roo — The body of a man was found floating in a lagoon in the Santa Cecilia neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, prompting a response from emergency services and state prosecutors.
According to initial reports, people near the artificial body of water spotted the corpse and immediately called 911.
The victim, who was only wearing blue underwear, appeared to have been in the water for several days. Local residents estimated the body may have been there for about four days.
Firefighters from the Cancun Fire Department recovered the body, while investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office processed the scene and transported the remains to the forensic medical service for an autopsy and identification.
The man remains unidentified, and authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause of death and circumstances surrounding the incident.
Neighbors said they did not recognize the victim but noted that people from outside the area often swim in the lagoon, sometimes without taking proper safety precautions.
