Tulum, Quintana Roo — Five men escaped unharmed after their boat capsized suddenly off the coast of Punta Solimán, north of Tulum’s shoreline. Emergency responders were mobilized, though no serious injuries were reported.
Incident Details
According to initial reports, the incident occurred yesterday afternoon when the vessel, operated as part of the tourist services of the Jashita hotel, was conducting an excursion at sea. A powerful wave struck the boat, causing it to overturn. The occupants—all adult men—were thrown into the water but managed to swim ashore unaided.
Upon reaching land, Tulum’s Civil Protection personnel arrived to assist. Four individuals were evaluated and showed no significant injuries, while one sustained a minor limb injury that required bandaging but no hospital transfer.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have yet to confirm the identities of the survivors or whether they were hotel guests or employees. Municipal officials stated that an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident and verify if the boat met all required safety standards for operation.
Safety Warnings Issued
Punta Solimán is a popular destination for exclusive tourist activities such as boat tours, snorkeling, and private excursions in less crowded areas of the Mexican Caribbean. However, maritime conditions can shift abruptly, posing risks without proper precautions.
Civil Protection urged nautical service providers to reinforce safety measures, check weather conditions before departure, and ensure vessels are equipped with life jackets and emergency communication devices.
While the incident resulted in no major consequences, it has raised concerns about oversight of maritime tourism services, particularly during the current rainy season with heightened wave activity along Quintana Roo’s coast.
