Boa constrictors are increasingly being spotted in urban areas of Mérida as they seek safer environments and more food. This shift can be attributed to their ability to travel long distances and adapt to various environments.
These sightings are not a new occurrence, but there has been a noticeable increase in recent months, causing concern among residents. Boa constrictors are common in the region, according to biologist Huncceel Uc Bacab. A recent tragic incident involved a boa constrictor that was electrocuted in downtown Mérida. The snake appeared to be a wild specimen that had ventured into the city in search of prey.
The rapid urbanization and fragmentation of ecosystems are forcing wildlife to seek refuge in increasingly smaller areas. Bacab warns that we can expect to see more instances of snakes venturing into urban areas as their natural habitats diminish.
On the afternoon of August 17th, a tragic incident occurred on Mérida's 52nd street in the historic center. A boa constrictor came into contact with high-voltage cables, leading to its immediate electrocution.
If you encounter a snake in your home, the best way to deter it is by creating smoke. Strong odors are uncomfortable for snakes and can effectively drive them away.
In the event that you find a boa constrictor or any other snake in your home, it's crucial not to approach it and to keep children and pets at a safe distance. Leave the snake where it is and immediately contact local organizations that can safely remove it. If you come across any type of snake, don't take any risks and call the Municipal Animal Care Center at 999 611 0250 or Ayuntatel at 070.
