Blue Heart campaign trains thousands to combat human trafficking

Training session for the Blue Heart campaign against human trafficking

Cancún, Q. Roo. — The “Blue Heart” campaign, focused on preventing and combating human trafficking, concluded 2025 with positive results in the municipality, having trained 3,881 people throughout the year, primarily from the hotel sector.

These advances position the initiative as one of the most relevant permanent strategies in preventing this crime in the state.

With the results obtained in 2025, the total number of people sensitized since the strategy’s launch in 2020 reaches 14,974, reinforcing its impact and continuity as a sustained preventive policy.

“This year the strategy is changing to reach more people, and it is precisely pending to include the airport and ADO in this training, in this sensitization,” said Marisol Sendo Rodríguez, head of the Benito Juárez DIF System.

She explained that, while the “Blue Heart” distinction has been adopted mainly by hotels, in recent years participation has expanded to include civil associations and first responder corporations.

This is the case of the Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence (Geavig), which has allowed for strengthening inter-institutional work and expanding the reach of the campaign.

During 2025, the strategy prioritized in-person training for personnel who maintain direct contact with tourists and visitors, with the purpose of facilitating early detection of possible human trafficking cases.

Nevertheless, given the scale of the problem and the need to reach more people, an adjustment in the focus for 2026 was announced, which will allow sensitizing a greater number of participants in less time.

Among the most notable advances is the interest and ongoing integration process of ADO and the Cancún International Airport, considered key actors due to the volume of users they serve daily.

In the case of the transportation company, work is underway on a mixed training model, predominantly virtual due to its operational dynamics, complemented with in-person sessions.

This scheme seeks to maximize reach without affecting the regular operation of the service.

Regarding the airport, she reported that coordination efforts continue to reinforce sensitization actions, which in previous stages included visual exhibitions developed by organizations like UNICEF, aimed at generating awareness among the general public.

“Sensitization is a key tool to combat this crime, as it allows personnel in strategic sectors to identify warning signs, activate protocols, and promptly channel cases to the corresponding authorities.”

Sendo Rodríguez added that strengthening the “Blue Heart” campaign seeks not only to increase the number of people trained but to generate a cultural change that prioritizes the protection of girls, boys, adolescents, and people in vulnerable situations.
