Puerto Morelos, Mexico — Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz has delivered equipment and supplies to the Animal Welfare division of the Secretariat of Ecology, Animal Welfare, and Sustainable Mobility. The initiative aims to improve working conditions for staff while ensuring the protection and fair treatment of animals under their care.
Strengthening Animal Welfare Efforts
During the handover, Mayor Tziu Muñoz emphasized the importance of respecting animal rights. "Like humans, animals have rights, and it is our duty to treat them with respect and consideration, especially when they are rescued victims of abuse," she stated.
The supplies included essential tools for capturing, handling, and containing animals following reports or complaints from the public. Aimée Rodríguez Vivas, Secretary of Ecology, Animal Welfare, and Sustainable Mobility, confirmed that the delivery also included medical supplies, vaccines, and veterinary medications for use in campaigns and brigades targeting domestic animals.
Promoting Responsible Adoption and Reporting
The mayor visited rescued animals previously subjected to mistreatment and stressed the importance of adoption to provide them with a second chance at life. She also urged residents to report cases of animal abuse.
Dafne García Peña, Director of Animal Welfare, Animal Control Center, Assistance, and Zoonosis, highlighted the necessity of the new equipment—such as capture poles, gloves, dart launchers, and cages—to prevent zoonotic diseases, which are infections transmitted from animals to humans.
Plans for a New Animal Control Center
García Peña also revealed preliminary plans for the construction of an Animal Control Center in Puerto Morelos to shelter sick or abused animals. "We are working on the corresponding project, evaluating public policies on animal welfare, and defining our next steps," she concluded.
The initiative underscores the local government’s commitment to animal welfare and public health while encouraging community involvement in safeguarding vulnerable animals.
