Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Despite the recent construction of new bike lanes, particularly on Avenida 10, the bike-sharing company Biciparq has not presented any projects to improve its service or encourage usage, according to city councilor Javier Renán Santos Morales.

Santos Morales, the sixth councilor and president of the Municipal Mobility Commission, said the concessionaire, which holds exclusive rights to designated bicycle parking spaces for rentals, has not approached the city with proposals.

In contrast, he noted that Playaparq, the company linked to the Urban Reordering Promoter and responsible for the parking meter system, has raised concerns about the loss of parking spaces on Avenida 10 and other areas where bike lanes have been implemented.

Santos Morales added that the city council has requested a meeting with Biciparq due to numerous citizen complaints, primarily from drivers affected by the use of wheel clamps, known as “arañas” (spiders).

He explained that one major issue is that these devices are sometimes placed on vehicles even while drivers are in the process of paying at parking meter machines.

Furthermore, he reported that after a fine is paid, staff can take up to two hours to remove the clamp, causing frustration among users.

In response, the city council has asked Playaparq to increase its workforce to speed up response times for clamp removal.
