Bacalar Maintains Tourism Stability by Focusing on National and Regional Markets

The Bacalar lagoon, a popular tourist attraction in Quintana Roo, Mexico

Bacalar, Quintana Roo — Despite a 3% decline in U.S. visitors to Quintana Roo due to political turbulence, the tourist destination of Bacalar has maintained stable hotel occupancy by focusing on national and regional markets.

Municipal Tourism Director Hiram Gómez Koyoc reported that while the state overall saw a drop in American tourists, Bacalar showed greater resilience. Visitor numbers from January to November 2025 reached 227,000, with an average variation of just 2% compared to 2024. Officials expect to improve on these figures in early 2026.

“Bacalar’s target remains Mexican and Canadian tourists,” Gómez Koyoc said, noting a significant increase in visitors from Belize, a market now considered a strategic ally for the southern part of the state.

The destination reports stability even during the low season. The first low season of the year, covering February and March, is maintaining steady average occupancy without sharp declines. Gómez Koyoc explained that one of the main risks for any destination is dropping from 80% occupancy one week to just 30% the next—a situation not currently occurring in Bacalar.

Current comparisons show improvement over the same period last year. Occupancy has increased from 30-35% at the start of the year to a range of 50-55%, allowing for consistent economic spending and strengthening operations for hotels, restaurants, and tourism service providers.

Strong Outlook for Easter Season

The outlook for Easter is even more favorable. The tourism director reported that 90% of reservations are already confirmed, anticipating one of the most successful periods of the year. Weather conditions and the appeal of the lagoon make those two weeks the peak demand period for the destination.

Beyond the natural boost of high season, the municipality is betting on events to help consolidate low seasons. These include Carnival celebrations, open water competitions, dance festivals, international gatherings, and nautical activities on the lagoon.

Regional Tourism Provides Solid Base

Regarding regional tourism, Gómez Koyoc emphasized that visitors from Yucatán, Campeche, Tabasco, and especially Belize represent a solid base for maintaining occupancy year-round. He explained that many Belizean tourists travel to Chetumal for shopping or administrative tasks and complement their stay with recreational activities in Bacalar, such as visits to beach clubs and lagoon tours.

The official highlighted a close alliance with the Hotel Association to reinforce promotion at regional fairs. Last year they participated in Belize’s Corn and Coconut Fair and maintain an active promotional agenda throughout southeastern Mexico.

International Context and Diverse Offerings

Regarding the international context, Gómez Koyoc noted that geopolitical circumstances create opportunities in the Canadian market, as many travelers choose the Mexican Caribbean over U.S. destinations. He considered that Bacalar and other state destinations should take advantage of this trend.

Finally, he emphasized that Bacalar offers options for all budgets, from luxury and boutique hotels to cabins and camping areas, along with a growing gastronomic offering featuring high-level proposals. During low season, several establishments launch promotions that encourage consistent visitor arrivals.
