Residents of the Diego Rojas Zapata neighborhood in Bacalar have issued a stern warning to the State Government. They demand immediate action to address the persistent flooding problem that has plagued their area and affected over a thousand people in various ways for the past 45 days. If their demands are not met, they threaten to block federal road 307.
On Wednesday morning, local residents staged a protest at the Bacalar municipal palace, demanding a resolution to the ongoing flooding. This issue has persisted for the past 45 days due to unexpected rainfall in southern Quintana Roo. The flooding has adversely affected over a thousand people in this municipality alone.
Residents claim that the flooding is a result of construction work on the Maya Train project, which they say has blocked natural drainage routes that previously allowed water to flow freely into the jungle. They argue that the engineers failed to construct adequate drains during the project, leading to the area being inundated since July 15.
The protesters declined to engage with municipal authorities and insisted on a direct dialogue with the municipal president. They have also issued an ultimatum to the state government to promptly address the flooding issue, or they will take drastic action and block the federal highway.
