Bacalar, Quintana Roo — Hotels and other accommodations in Bacalar are currently operating at 35% to 45% occupancy, but tourism providers expect a significant boost starting in late March as a school break and Easter week approach.

Hiram Gómez Koyoc, the tourism director for the Pueblo Mágico municipality, said they anticipate exceeding 90% occupancy during the Easter holiday period. Many hotels already have confirmed and sometimes prepaid reservations, with more bookings expected as the dates near.

“Bacalar is heading toward almost full capacity for the upcoming Easter week season,” Gómez Koyoc said. “This is because there are already confirmed reservations, and demand is expected to increase in the days leading up to the holiday, when visitor numbers peak. These are quite encouraging figures and a good sign because it will help generate significant economic spillover for the destination, which managed to sustain a less severe low season than last year with occupancy levels ranging between 30% and 45%.”

He noted that this projection is based on occupancy estimates from the Hotel and Restaurant Association (AHRB) and the Central and South Hotel Association, which expect an economic respite to help maintain operations, staff payments, permits, and taxes.

The official added that after extensive promotion of the vacation spot, they project an increase in visitors attracted not only by the main natural attraction, the Laguna de los Siete Colores with the Canal de los Piratas, but also by other points of interest like the Ichkabal archaeological site, which remains free to access.

“The efforts made since last year to promote the destination and participation in tourism fairs should be reflected not only during Easter week but also into the summer, when numbers are expected to rebound,” Gómez Koyoc said. “Now it’s not just the lagoon attracting visitors, but the diversification of the tourism offer with other attractions like the Ichkabal ruins and even the Maya Train, which helps bring travelers to the southern part of the state.”

He added that the majority of travelers arriving in Bacalar are national and even local visitors who choose to spend their holidays there, setting the stage for an excellent season.
